So today Melanie and I headed down to the ole’ National Folk Festival to volunteer. As usual, the event was quite busy and the station we worked was in the Capital One Family Area, which was jumping all afternoon. We were helping everyone make crazy hats out of paper bags and though I think I developed a bit of Carpal Tunnel making all of those paper bag hats, I was very happy to be volunteering.
I really like the way the National Folk Festival has run for the past few years and will be sad to see it go. The good news, however, is that the Richmond Folk Festival will be replacing the National Folk Festival in 2008. The later will be moving on to Butte, Montana.
So my takeaway from the experience was two fold. For one, I am glad that I volunteered at the event and look forward to volunteering at more events around Richmond. I think it’s a good thing to do and there are not many people doing enough of it. Secondly, I am very happy to see that the turnout and response has been good enough to warrant the creation of our very own Folk Festival. This area is rich in it musical talent and I think it is great that there will be a place to share it with the community. I look forward to next year and I am pretty sure my shirt will have volunteer on it somewhere. Anyone care to join me?
